Do you love music? Obviously the answer is yes. Which type of music do you love?  Music comes in different styles based on characteristics such as beat, pitch, pace, tempo, rhythm, melody, lyrics and so on. In this article, we delve into the x top music genres that are prevalent today.  

Blues

Blues originated in the Southern United States in the 1860s.Originally blues was performed by a single person using a guitar or a banjo as their instrument. Due to improvement of technology and introduction of new instruments such as electric guitars, bass and drums blues music has evolved too.

Jazz

Jazz is popular in the West African and European culture. It originated in the African American communities in the late 19th to early 20th century in New Orleans. As Jazz became an international genre, there was rise of different styles. Jazz introduced the world to women performers who were great performers and composers. They were known for their great vocals. Some of these are Betty Carter, Ella Fitzgerald, and Abbey Lincoln etc. In 1920 women started playing instruments and started getting recognized for their great skills in piano.      

Rock Music

When rock music was introduced in the 1950s string instruments were being used. Nowadays modern instruments like the electric guitar, keyboard etc. are being used distorting its accurate definition. Rock and roll originated in the United States becoming a popular music genre to many young people in the world. Some of the popular rock stars include Bill Haley, Little Richard etc.

Reggae

This genre originated from Jamaica in the late 1960s .It became popular very fast and emerged as Jamaican dominant music. Reggae took the world by storm and by 1970 it was not only popular in Jamaica but in the whole world particularly in Africa, US and Britain. Reggae music is a genre that is perceived to speak about the oppression of the people and their struggles. Some of the reggae musicians are Bob Marley, Burning Spear, Peter Tosh and many others

Soul

The Soul music genre originated in the united states from the African American people in the 1950s and 1960s. It consist elements of rhythm and blues, jazz and gospel. Soul genre involves clapping hands and moving to the beat.

Hip hop

Hip hop is also known as rap music. It originated in South Bronx in New York, introduced by the African Americans young people in the 1970s. This genre features elements such as: rapping, breakdancing, Disc jockeying etc. Hip hop has been appreciated all over the world.
